Filipino-American president's ball will be May 17

The Filipino-American Organization of Northeastern Ohio is celebrating the 2013 Presidents’ Gala Ball on May 17 at Mahoning Country Club, 710 E. Liberty St.

The new president, Alwyn Galela, will be recognized, as well as past presidents Leah Schindell; Thomas Collins; Mark Susa; Dr. Ernesto Angtuaco; Dr. Escarlito Sevilla; Dr. Esmeralda Espino; Dr. Fely Puray; Estrellita Sevilla; Lorna Carolipio; Teresita Catipay; Desi Bader; Dolores McClain; and Ken Bader.

Galela is a registered nurse at a rehabilitation hospital in Warren. His emphasis during his term will be the welfare and development of Filipino-American youths through social and cultural programs.

Other officers are Hermie Harper, vice president; Flora Knott and Cora Becker, corresponding secretaries; Lorna Carolipio, treasurer; and Joseph Espino, auditor.

Organization advisers are Ken Bader, Desi Bader, Schindell and Puray.

Monsignor Robert Siffrin will give the invocation, and the keynote speaker will be Amado Defante, KGOR from Parma, a senior member of the Knights of Rizal, a chartered international organization. His topic will be “The Youth is the Hope of Our Future,” borrowed from the Philippine hero Dr. Jose Rizal.

The evening also will feature traditional food and entertainment and will include a fashion show and Filipino dances. The Soundwaves will provide music.

Guests of all cultural backgrounds are welcome.
