Penguin baseball schedule update

Due to weather-related cancellations over the past few weeks, the Youngstown State baseball team has added two games to its schedule.

The Penguins will play at Ohio State on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. at Bill Davis Stadium. It will be their first contest against the Buckeyes since 2002. YSU and Ohio State had a scheduled game rained out in 2012.

YSU will also play May 14 against Canisius. Gates will open 9:30 a.m., and first pitch at Eastwood Field will be at 11 a.m.

There are 17 home games on the home schedule with 12 Horizon League contests.

Anna Pompeo sets 10,000 meter record

Raleigh, N.C.

At the Raleigh Relays, Youngstown State junior Anna Pompeo eclipsed a long-standing school record in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 35:25.96.

Pompeo’s time bested the previous mark of 35:29.01 set by Laura Thomas on April 24, 1999.

Thomas was an NCAA Championship qualifier for her performance that year.

Pompeo finished 14th in the event.

Her previous best time was a 36:22.12 which she set last April.

Basketball camp

The Youngstown State men’s basketball team has two summers boys’ basketball camps in June.

The full court camp runs June 10-13 and the half court camp is June 17-20.

The full court camp runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., costs $140 per participate and is geared for grades 6-11.

The half court camp runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon, costs $95 per camper and is for grades 2-9.

The Penn-Ohio Athletic Club scholarship fund scramble golf outing will be May 25 at 1:30 p.m. at Oak Tree Country Club.

Mahoning Valley Scrappers youth camp

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers have a three-day youth baseball camp from July 24-26.

The camp is for players age 8-12.

All exercises and instruction will be taught by Scrappers players and coaching staff, and will focus on baseball fundamentals, sportsmanship and healthy competition.

Boys and girls of all ability levels are encouraged to participate and learn from the Scrappers players in a small group setting.

Boxing at Mountaineer

In the main event, the vacant WBC (NABF) Super Lightweight Championship will be on the line when undefeated former IBF and IBC World Champion Paul “The Pittsburgh Kid” Spadafora steps into the ring with WBC (USNBC) former champion “Red Hot” Rob Frankel of Denver, Colorado.

Hole in one

Leo Morris of Struthers used a 5 iron to shoot a hole in one on the 155-yard No. 18 at Knoll Run.

The shot was witnessed by Dick Prest and Joe Shusok.
