Penn State Shenango Earth Day is April 13

Penn State Shenango hosts Earth Fest 2013 from noon to 5 p.m. April 13 downtown. The event is free.

Educational presentations are “Farm-to-Table Programs” by Elliott Lengel from 1 to 1:45 p.m.; “Butterfly Gardening” by master gardener Donnajean Anyeart from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m.; and “Tomato Gardening” by TC Conner, the Write Gardener, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Live music will be performed all afternoon beginning with a drum circle from noon to 12:45 p.m. Guests may bring their own drums to join in the circle. It will be followed by acoustic rock by Mandolin Whiskey from 1 to 2 p.m., environmental songs and puppetry by Chris Rowlands from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m., and the jazz quartet Hot Club Allegheny, featuring local musician Max Schang, from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Activities for children and families are raku pottery glazing by Penn State ceramics instructor Christian Kuharik; an amphibian and reptile program by Pymatuning State Park; environmentally themed crafts and activities by Hermitage School Green Team, face painting by First Presbyterian Church of Sharon; and a reading of Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax” by the Penn State Shenango Drama Club.

The Farm Bureau Mobile Agriculture Science Lab will visit the event for the first time. It will be in the faculty/staff parking lot outside the Penn State Shenango science building on Penn Avenue, along with the eco-friendly cars from Mel Grata Scion and Montrose Auto Group.

Other activities include a recycling drive for computer equipment and cellphones that are 10 years old or less.

Penn State Berkey Creamery in Penn State Shenango’s Great Hall will be open during the event to sell ice cream.
