YSU sweeps Horizon League scholar honors

Youngstown State swept the Horizon League’s Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Month awards for February as senior women’s basketball player Brandi Brown and junior baseball player Drew Dosch taking the honors.

It is the third honor of the academic year for Brown, who also won in November and December.

Brown garnered 55.6 percent of the February voting, while Dosch received 88.9 percent.

In February, Brown was voted First-Team Academic All-American and averaged 21.6 points.

She posted two 30-point games, including a 39-point effort against UIC, and registered five double-doubles.

Dosch hit .429 with six doubles, a triple and a home run. He posted five multi-hit games while scoring six runs with three RBIs.

Baseball falls, 5-3

Dayton

Wright State scored all five of its runs in the second through fourth innings and held on to beat the Youngstown State baseball team 5-3 on Friday.

Mike Accardi, Neil Schroth and Josh White had two hits apiece, and six different Penguins either scored or drove in a run.

Four Raiders had two hits apiece.

After scoring six runs in the top of the first in Thursday’s series opener, YSU struck early again on Friday with two runs.

Accardi and Schroth started the game with back-to-back singles, and Marcus Heath doubled in Accardi two batters later.

Penguin tennis wins

The Youngstown State women’s tennis team won for the third straight time beating Duquesne 5-2 on Friday.

With the win, the Penguins improve to 10-7 for the year while Duquesne is now 5-9.

YSU won the doubles point by winning two of three matches and won four of the six singles clashes.

The contest was the final non-conference match of the year for YSU which was 9-7 in outside of league play this year.

In singles play, Paula de Man won at No. 1 by a 6-4, 6-2 score over Judy Li.

With the win, de Man has won eight straight matches and improves to 15-1 for the season.

Have A Heart Solak basketball tournament

The Have A Heart Ella Rose Solak 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be held at Lowellville High School on April 6, beginning at 9 a.m.

The tournament is for age divisions 5th-6th grade, 7th-8th grade, 9th-10th grade, 11th-12th grade, and 19 years old and up, for males and females.

Each registered participant comes with their team members to play against others based on age division.

Proceeds from this event are placed in the Ella Rose Solak Memorial Scholarship fund, and a graduating senior from Lowellville High School is awarded a scholarship given in her name.

Mark Martin to replace Hamlin in car No. 11

CHARLOTTE, N.C.

Mark Martin will drive for Joe Gibbs Racing while Denny Hamlin recovers from a fractured vertebra in his lower back.

Martin’s first start in the No. 11 Toyota will be next week at Martinsville Speedway, where he wasn’t scheduled to race. Brian Vickers had already been tabbed to drive Martin’s car for Michael Waltrip Racing at Martinsville.

“We’ve been real fortunate to have never been in this situation with the need to find someone to fill in for an injured driver,” said team President J.D. Gibbs. “A lot goes into a decision like this, but we are really pleased to have someone of the character and caliber of Mark Martin to fill in while Denny is out.”
