Road closures

Beginning Monday, state Route 165, which runs through Beaver, Goshen and Green townships in Mahoning County, will be closed east of U.S. Route 62 through late April for bridge repairs.

The detour will be Route 62 to state Route 14 to state Route 46, said a spokesman with the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The work is the beginning of $2.8 million project to resurface Routes 165, 14 and state Route 164. The project also includes various bridge repairs on all three roads. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by late September 2013.

Salem woman dead

SALEM

Salem police and the Columbiana County Coroner’s Office are trying to determine how an elderly woman died in her Cedar Ridge Road home Friday afternoon.

According to Lt. David Casto, Salem police, officers were sent to the home about 4:30 p.m. to check on the welfare of an elderly man attempting to harm himself. The man was taken to the hospital where he told officers that his wife was still in the home.

Officers returned to the home and found the elderly woman dead in an upstairs bedroom.

Police have not released the woman’s name and the coroner’s office has launched an investigation into the death.

Girl starts blaze

NEW MIDDLETOWN

A 10-year-old girl playing with a lighter intentionally ignited an upstairs bedroom mattress, causing a house fire at 10202 Main St., village police said.

Three people in the home escaped without injury in the 2:35 p.m. Thursday fire, which was confined to the bedroom, but filled the house with smoke and caused heavy smoke damage. The house had no smoke detectors. New Middletown and Springfield Township firefighters battled the blaze.

Shooter training

New Middletown

The New Middletown Police Department in cooperation with Springfield Local School district will host the Ohio attorney general active shooter training for educators at 8 a.m. Wednesday at the Springfield Intermediate Middle School auditorium on state Route 170.

The program will be part of the in-service waiver day and will be attended by the district’s 135 administrative staff, teachers, and employees.

Instruction will be provided by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy and will focus on identifying traits and warning signs that educators can use to predict potential threats and enact early intervention to prevent tragedy.
