Boardman librarian Karen Saunders put on a story time for 4- and 5-year-olds all about trains Feb. 26. Saunders began by asking the adults at the story time who had ever been on a train. Many of the adults had and told a little bit about their experiences on trains, including one trip through several states.

Next, Saunders read a book about the different names of the different parts of a freight train, such as a trestle and the caboose. Saunders also read “Choo Choo, Clickety Clack!” by Margaret Mayo, which was about the many different ways there are to travel in the world, like boats, hot air balloons, bikes, race cars, and more. This book offered children a chance to make noises along with the modes of transportation in the story.

Saunders led children through a variety of hands-on activities, such as “This Little Train,” using the fingers on the children’s hands to be the trains, and “Engine Engine, Number 9,” a classic children’s game.

The story time ended with a craft where the children could color trains and glue them to paper stands. After the craft, the children took the trains around in a circle and made one large train circuit.
