Poland librarian Amanda Kollar hosted a story time for toddlers all about similarities and differences in the children’s room of the library March 7.

The story time was filled with activities that illustrated opposites, such as being loud and quiet, lifting something heavy as opposed to something light, being big and being small, and clapping fast or clapping slowly.

Kollar also did an activity called “Two Little Blackbirds,” which used blackbird cut-outs to show directional opposites and similarities, as well as noise level opposites and similarities. This activity was followed by singing “The Opposite Song.”

Kollar read a couple books dealing with opposites as well. “Clifford’s Opposites” by Norman Bridwell was about all of the different things that Clifford sees throughout his day, such as a big ball and a small ball or being awake instead of being asleep. Another book about opposites that was read was “Spot’s Opposites” by Eric Hill.

The story time ended with an opposites version of “If You’re Happy and You Know It” and a craft where children colored one empty and one full gum ball machine cut-out.
