The Canfield High School Choral and Band Departments, under the direction of choir director Kelly Scurich and band director Michael Kelly, performed at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) District Five Large Group Adjudicated Event March 8-9. With four groups participating at this prestigious event, both departments earned “Superior” ratings.
For the choirs, both the One Octave Ensemble and the Chamber Choir received Superior ratings after performing Saturday morning at Howland Middle School.
Canfield was the only school from OMEA District Five (Ashtabula, Mahoning and Trumbullcounties) to have more than one choir participate. Both the Concert and Symphonic Bands’ “Superior” ratings mark the fifth consecutive year both bands earned the coveted top rating.
In addition, Canfield High School was the only school in OMEA District Five to have two bands receive all “Superior” ratings.
The Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) Large Group Adjudicated Event is a standards-based competition in which instrumental and vocal ensembles enter a performance class (AA, A, B, C, D or Festival) and prepare three selections of music, one being a required piece from the class entered. The ensembles perform their prepared selection in front a panel of three adjudicators.
Then, the students go to a sight-reading stage in which they have a relative short period of time to look over a piece of music they have never seen before. They then perform the piece before a sight-reading adjudicator. The four adjudicator scores are combined to determine the overall rating. The rating system used is “I” for a superior performance, “II” for an outstanding performance, “III” for an acceptable performance, “IV” for a poor performance and “V” for a very poor performance.
