10-year-old girl playing with lighter starts fire in New Middletown

NEW MIDDLETOWN — A 10-year-old girl playing with a lighter intentionally ignited an upstairs bedroom mattress, causing a house fire at 10202 Main St., village police said.

Three people in the home escaped without injury in the 2:35 p.m. Thursday fire, which was confined to the bedroom, but filled the house with smoke and caused heavy smoke damage. The house had no smoke detectors. New Middletown and Springfield Township firefighters battled the blaze.
