Pet a llama at Lucky Llama 4-Club

Stop by and pet a llama from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday outside of Sears at 6009 Mahoning Ave. For the 10th-consecutive year, the Llucky Llama 4-H Club will collect monetary donations and nonperishable food items for Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley’s Harvest for Hunger campaign.

Since 2003, the club has raised more than $4,100 to help the food bank provide more than $61,500 worth of food to hungry families in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

Harvest for Hunger is a monthlong food and funds drive that takes place each March to help replenish food bank shelves during the spring and summer months when donations taper off. For information on Second Harvest, call 330-792-5522 or visit www.mahoningvalleysecondharvest.org.

Diabetes eating tips

A free educational workshop on “Healthy Eating for Diabetes” is offered by Niles City Health Department from 1 to 1:45 p.m. April 5 with sign-in at 12:45 p.m. at the Mayor Ralph Infante Wellness Center, 213 Sharkey Drive.

Youngstown State University dietetic students will discuss how food affects blood glucose (sugar) and review carbohydrate basics and counting and how a healthy diet helps keep blood-sugar levels within target ranges. There will be prizes and take-home information.

Immunization clinics set

Niles City Health Department, 34 W. State St., offers immunization clinics from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday and April 17. Appointments are not necessary, and no one will be refused because of inability to pay.

Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. A child’s immunization records are required, and the child should be feeling well with no illness, fever or rash.

Alzheimer’s workshop on April 6

The Alzheimer’s Assistance and Referral Network offers a free “Alzheimer’s Activity Workshop” from 10 a.m. to noon April 6 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2305 S. Canfield-Niles Road (state Route 46). Reservations are required. Call 330-788-9755.

The workshop goal is to help caregivers choose appropriate activities for individuals and focus on inexpensive projects. Material will be provided.

Preparing for disaster day

The American Red Cross, in partnership with Dominion East Ohio, will have a Preparedness Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 13 locally at Eastwood Mall, 5555 Youngstown-Warren Road. The goal is to teach participants the importance to be “Red Cross ready” in the event of a disaster. Participants will be given the opportunity to take a pre-test and post-test to determine their safety and preparedness knowledge.

The five-minute test and follow-up will be completed by trained Red Cross and Dominion volunteers. Those who take both parts of the test receive a “safety backpack” filled with supplies such as an emergency blanket, glow sticks, first-aid kit, emergency drinking water, face mask, gloves and other useful information in case of an emergency.
