Allied Waste workers go on strike

Workers at Allied Waste in Youngstown went on strike at midnight, which could affect curbside trash collection in the coming days.

The Youngstown workers, represented by Teamsters Local 377, have been in an ongoing contract dispute with Republic Services/Allied Waste for months now, after the company refused to extend their contract in October.

The company wants the workers to accept a change shifting workers from a pension fund that is part of the failing Central States plan to a 401 (k) program in which the company would match employee contributions dollar for dollar for only the first 3 percent of their salary.
