72-year-old woman thrwarts home robbery attempt

YOUNGSTOWN — A 26-year-old man is in police custody after attempting to break into the South Side home of a 72-year-old woman who fired a shot at him and held him at gunpoint until police arrival.

The man was taken to Mahoning County jail. Prosecutors haven't formally filed charges against him today, but he faces at least one charge of aggravated burglary.

Police said the man kicked in the window of the Ferndale Avenue woman about 8 p.m. Wednesday. The woman fired a shot at him, and police found him lying on the kitchen floor being held at gunpoint. He was not shot, but was treated for injuries sustained from the broken window.
