Red is the color of victory in Columbiana County

Red was the winners’ color Tuesday night at the 28th annual Columbiana County Classic basketball all-star games.

The Crestview duo of Evan Nentwick (18 points) and Derek Bable combined for 32 points to lead the Red team to a 65-54 win over Blue in the boys game.

The winners, coached by Eric Whitmer of Leetonia, held a 29-25 halftime lead and stretched it with a 36-29 edge in the second half.

Troy Hudson of Beaver Local added eight points and his Beaver Local teammate Brandon Fetty scored seven, as did Leetonia’s Cody Valentine.

The Blue team, coached by Rich Hart of Salem, was paced by Derek Thomspon of East Liverpool and Luke Griffith of Southern with 11 points each. Salem’s Zach Economus added nine and Kyler Woodward of Southern scored eight.

In the girls game, Mary Davis nailed four 3-pointers to lead the Red to a 59-50 triumph. Her 12 points were backed by Kati Hipsley of Southern with nine, and the Salem duo of Lindsey Foster and Ciera Trybend who scored eight each.

The Red team, coached by Corey Leek of Southern, led 25-23 at halftime and outscored Blue by 34-27 in the second half.

The Blue squad, coached by Sam Mathias of United, was led by Nicole Mann of Leetonia and Courtney Hydrick of United with eight points each. United’s Samantha Spitler and Wellsville’s Monica Wilson added seven apiece.

The event featured senior basketball players from Columbiana County schools and is sponsored by the Columbiana County Basketball Coaches Association.
