Baptist Pastors’ Council plans MLK memorial

The Baptist Pastors’ Council of Youngstown and Vicinity will commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King during a public memorial service April 4 in the rotunda of Mahoning County Courthouse, 120 Market St.

The service, which will begin at 11:30 a.m., will feature a keynote address by Dr. James Baber, executive vice president of academic and student affairs at Eastern Gateway Community College.

The event will include dramatic performances by the Warriors Inc.’s Creative Arts Youth Troupe and a song by Gigi Oatman.

The council, in partnership with the Youngstown State University Foundation, has awarded annually the Rev. Martin Luther & Coretta Scott King Testament of Hope Scholarships since 2008. The council will recognize the 2012-13 scholarship recipients: Ryan Allen, Micalise Feagins, LaQuesha Lewis and Eve Griffin, YSU students.

The Rev. Henry McNeil is president of the Baptist Pastors’ Council. It was founded in 1927 and includes area pastors and ministers whose mission is to enhance the quality of life for the residents of the Mahoning Valley. It has provided advocacy and community engagement in the greater Youngstown as its core function.
