BRACEVILLE TOWNSHIP

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be at 11 a.m. May 17 for the newly installed walking trail at the Thomas A. Swift MetroPark, 870 Benedict-Leavittsburg Road, Leavittsburg.

The trail is being dedicated in memory of Ethan Swift, son of Thomas A Swift, Trumbull County probate judge.

The trail, made from mulch, is about a half-mile long. The trail also will include an arboretum.

Grant for firefighters

CORTLAND

The Cortland Fire Department has been awarded a $60,515 federal grant to improve safety and operations in the department.

The money comes from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency Assistance to Firefighters program.

The grant program helps firefighters and other first responders to buy protective equipment, vehicles and gear.

National History Day

YOUNGSTOWN

About 300 middle and high school students will compete in Ohio’s District Four National History Day from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 6 at Youngstown State University’s Kilcawley Center.

Participants are from schools in Ashtabula, Columbiana, Geauga, Mahoning, Portage and Trumbull counties. This year’s theme is “Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, Events.”

Students in grades 6-12 will have their entries judged by historians, educators and other experienced professionals, and winners will advance to the state finals at the Ohio State University. State winners will go to the national finals at the University of Maryland in June.

National History Day, headquartered in College Park, Md., began in Ohio in 1974.

Collaboration Award

Judge Thomas A. Swift of Trumbull County Probate Court was given the Collaboration Award at the 28th Annual Conference of the Ohio Coalition For Adult Protective Services.

Sylvia Pla-Raith, president, said the award is in recognition of Judge Swift’s long-standing dedication, service and support of adult protection services.

“Because Judge Swift exemplifies the spirit and purpose of the award, it will be known hereafter as the ‘Judge Thomas A. Swift Award,’” Pla-Raith said.

Dana School lecture

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music will present a lecture by noted musicologist Francesca Brittan at 4 p.m. Friday in Bliss Recital Hall.

The lecture, titled “Listening in Hell,” is free and open to the public.

Brittan is assistant professor of Music at Case Western Reserve University. She holds a doctorate from Cornell University and was a research fellow at Queens’ College, University of Cambridge. She works on 19th-century music (particularly Berlioz) and American popular music (especially blues traditions).

The lecture focuses on the made-up language featured in Hector Berlioz’s “Pandaemonium” scene in “La Damnation de Faust.”
