Portions of the Mahoning Valley may see up to 7 inches of snow by this afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service, Trumbull and Mahoning counties are under a winter weather advisory until noon today. Both counties were expected to receive 2 to 3 inches Sunday night, with an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow today. The weather service said temperatures in the area should reach the upper 30s. The weather service also said there is a 30 percent to 40 percent chance of snow Tuesday, with temperatures peaking in the mid- 30s.

Columbiana County, however, is under a winter storm warning until 11 a.m. today and may receive up to 7 inches of snow in certain areas. Lawrence County in Pennsylvania is under the same storm warning.

“Unlike with the lake effect snow that we’re used to, this snow storm is coming from the south,” said weather reporter Matt Stone of 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast news partner. “It shouldn’t be anything we’re not used to by now.”

Residents in the tri-county area can expect the snow to taper off by the afternoon. The weather service and others urged motorists to drive carefully and allow extra time today as some roads may become hazardous.
