The Girard High School robotics team is headed to the world championships after winning the regional title at Xavier University in Cincinnati this weekend.

The Robocats were among 52 teams competing at the Queen City Regional. They went 8-2 in qualifying matches before going 6-0 in elimination matches.

Robotics teams from Austintown Fitch and Warren G. Harding were among other area teams who qualified for the semifinals. Youngstown Chaney also competed but did not qualify for the final rounds.

The win qualifies the Robocats for the world championships in St. Louis beginning April 24.

“This is the single best team we’ve had in 14 years of competition,” said Judy Barber, Robocats coach and adviser. Barber said the last time the team went to the world championships was in 2009.

“I’m so proud of this team and the way they worked,” said Barber.
