Jennings Center hosts two events in April

Staff report

SLIPPERY ROCK, PA.

Two events are scheduled next month at Jennings Environmental Center, 2951 Prospect Road.

Junior, cadet and senior Girl Scouts and Webelo and older Boy Scouts are invited to attend “Scout Stewards,” a learning and volunteering event from 9 a.m. to noon April 21 at the center.

The event is part of a weekend when scouts will discuss “Take Back the Woods: Battling Invasive Species.” Scouts will discover the importance of maintaining native-plant species and participate in a volunteer project to rid the park of invasive plants.

Registration is limited. There is a fee of $5 per person for children and adults. It must be paid in advance, but the fee is refundable upon attendance. Interested individual Scouts or troops, packs or groups of no more than 10 must register beginning at 9 a.m. April 3. Registration ends at 3 p.m. April 12. Call 724-794-6011.

The center also is seeking volunteers who will pitch in to help manage invasive plants from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 20.

Invasive plants are a major factor in the decline of native plant species, second only to habitat loss.

Lunch will be provided to participants and each will receive a native plant.

Volunteers must be 12 or older. Interested parties must register before April 12. Registration can be completed online at www.dcnr.state.pa.us/Calendar/list.asp or by calling 724-794-6011.
