The Youngstown State baseball team’s series against Chicago State scheduled for this weekend has been canceled due to poor weather.

No make-up dates have been set for any of the games.

YSU is scheduled to play at Akron on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Penguin tennis

The Youngstown State women’s tennis team opens Horizon League play today against Detroit at the Boardman Tennis Center.

The Penguins are 8-7 while the Titans enter at 5-3.

First serve is set for 5 p.m.

The eight wins are the most for the program since 2008-09 when the Penguins won 11.

Golf openings

Diamond Back golf course is now registering leagues.

Among the openings is Monday at 5 p.m., two-man teams, best ball format. Play begins April 15.

Also the Tuesday high school league meeting will be April 2 at 4:30 p.m.

The practice round will follow registration for boys and girls,

The Wednesday Davidson’s Men’s League will start April 17 at 5 p.m. It’s for two-man teams and alternates openings.

Boone falls in 6th

MONTREAL

Youngstown fighter Darnell Boone was knocked out in the sixth round Friday night by IBF No. 1 rated super middleweight Adonis “Superman” Stevenson (20-1, 17 KOs).

Boone (19-21-3, 8 KOs) is the only fighter to have beaten Stevenson, having scored a second-round KO in April 2010.

Boone was dropped by a body shot in round six at Montreal’s Bell Centre. He was then knocked out at 2:43.

The Frank Bubba Memorial Classic All Star Basketball game will be played on Tuesday at Howland High School at 6 p.m.

The game features Trumbull versus Mahoning in both boys and girls.

The game is sponsored by the Trumbull County Coaches Association.

England routs San Marino 8-0 in qualifier

England routed San Marino 8-0 Friday in a soccer World Cup qualifier for its largest victory margin in 26 years.

San Marino, tied for 207th and last in the FIFA rankings, fell behind on Alessandro Della Valle’s own goal in the 12th minute at Serravalle.

Jermain Defoe got two goals, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ashley Young, Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge scored. Rooney’s goal was his 34th for England.

England’s victory margin was its largest since beating Turkey 8-0 in a European qualifier.

Silverette wins Aqueduct feature race

NEW YORK

Silverette won the $62,720 allowance feature at Aqueduct on Friday in her first start since last June.

The gray 4-year-old beat Ann’s Smart Dancer by one length in the race for fillies and mares. It was her third win in six starts.

Silverette, ridden by Rajiv Maragh was trained by Dale Romans, was timed for the six furlongs in 1:11.40.

She paid $6.30, $3.80 and $3.20 as the 2-1 second choice. Ann’s Smart Dance returned $4.30 and $2.80.
