A North Bloomfield woman accused of bilking her employer out of almost $100,000 appeared before the judge of Central District Court on Friday. The owner of Trumbull Contracting, a construction company, said Alicia Sardich, 28, embezzled the money by writing dozens of checks to herself, according to The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, 21 WFMJ-TV. Sardich is charged with felony theft and forgery. She told a Trumbull County deputy sheriff she has a gambling problem.

The Austintown Board of Education will meet in special session at 1 p.m. today at the central office on Raccoon Road. The board will adjourn to executive session to discuss the sale of property, employment and compensation of public employees and to prepare for negotiations with public employees. Action is scheduled to follow the closed-door session.

WWF’S Earth Hour

Youngstown City Council passed a resolution at its Wednesday meeting supporting The World Wildlife Fund’s international Earth Hour.

The resolution will be read at 8:30 p.m. today during the Wine, Cheese, Chocolate, Treez fundraising event for Treez Please from 7 to 10 p.m. at First Unitarian Universalist Church, 1105 Elm St.

One World, One Sky

Children from the Jewish Community Center Child Development Center, 505 Gypsy Lane, will join Elmo, Big Bird and Hu Hu Zhu — a Muppet from the Chinese co-production of Sesame Street — as they explore the night sky in “One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure,” a new planetarium show created by Sesame Workshop, starting at 10:15 a.m. Monday. The daylong show travels to area schools in an inflatable dome that provides children with an age-appropriate introduction to astronomy while forging cross-cultural connections.

Teachers receive astronomy-based curriculum to share with students before the dome arrives, and follow-up activities for after it departs.

Sen. Cafaro appointed

COLUMBUS

Eric Kearney, Ohio Senate minority leader, has appointed state Sen. Capri Cafaro of Liberty, D-32nd, to serve on the Ohio Turnpike Oversight Committee. The committee can submit written recommendations to the Ohio Turnpike Commission describing new turnpike projects or new interchanges located on existing projects the committee believes the commission should consider constructing.
