Novice quilters took advantage of the Show What You Know program on quilting to learn the art at the Boardman Library March 14. Margaret Klein and Shari Della Penna, both retired librarians, shared their knowledge of quilting with several attendees.

The program was an introduction to quilting with Klein opening the session with a brief history of quilting.

“Quilting started in Europe as a necessity to keep warm. Quilters used leftover fabric from the clothing they would make,” Klein explained.

Klein also said she has been sewing all her life and brought several quilts to show the quilters.

Della Penna said she started sewing for her grandchildren and also brought in a quilt she had made to share with the group.

“I wanted to bring in my grandson’s quilt which I made for him, but he said no. He wouldn’t give it up,” Della Penna said.

The focus of the quilting lesson was appliqu quilting, in which Della Penna instructed the group. Each attendee made an appliqu quilt square, with fabric provided.

Klein and Della Penna also provided a list of quilt shops in the area to attendees and also each one a list of recommended quilting books which were available for check out at the library.
