A Niles woman killed in a head-on car accident in Ebro, Fla., last weekend was the driver of one of the cars. The Florida State Highway Patrol initially reported that Courtney Miller, 21, of Niles, and a student at Ohio State University, was a passenger in the car. Earlier this week, the patrol said Miller was actually the driver of the car, according to the Associated Press. A passenger, Brittany Gallagher, 21, of Willoughby, also an OSU student, was also killed. The OSHPl initially reported that she was driving. Two backseat passengers were injured in the accident and remain hospitalized. AP reports say Miller drifted into oncoming traffic while driving the morning of March 16. Alcohol wasn’t a factor.

2 indicted in shooting

A Mahoning County grand jury Thursday indicted two men charged with crimes relating to the wounding of a Youngstown State University nursing student last month. Rashaud Lewis and Sylean Wilson, both 19 and of Pittsburgh, are charged with felony counts of obstruction of justice and felonious assault. Police say Wilson stood near Pennsylvania Avenue near the YSU campus firing at a car in which a group of young women were seated early on Feb. 17. Police believe he fired multiple shots at the car. Brittany N. Johnson, 23, of Bedford Heights, a YSU nursing student and passenger in the car on Pennsylvania, was taken by a friend to St. Elizabeth Health Center after being shot in the torso. She is expected to make a full recovery.

Wilson ran into a Pennsylvania Avenue apartment building after the shooting, where police later captured him. They accuse Lewis of trying to prevent police from entering the building where Wilson was hiding.

50 vie for president

The Youngstown State University Presidential Search Advisory Committee met Wednesday to begin reviewing applications for the position. The 17-member committee was appointed in January to spearhead the national search for a successor to YSU President Cynthia E. Anderson, who retires July 1 after three years in office.

AGB Search Inc. in Washington, D.C., is assisting in the search. “We are pleased with the quality of the applicant pool and look forward to progressing through the screening process,” said Sudershan Garg, chairman of the YSU Board of Trustees and the search committee.

The committee received about 50 applications and is expected to present to the trustees no later than May 15 three to five candidates determined to be the best qualified. The board then will determine which of the candidates to invite for campus interviews. Trustees hope to select the next president no later than June 12.
