Last weekend, the Covelli Centre hosted the best youth wrestlers from all over Ohio, as wrestlers sixth grade and under competed at an OAC Grade School State Championship.
Canfield Wrestling Club had 10 wrestlers qualify for the biggest grade school state meet in Ohio. After two full days of wrestling, two wrestlers, Ethan Fletcher and Tyler Stein, were able to place in the top eight in Ohio.
Fletcher in Division 3 (9-10 year-olds), 71 pounds, started Saturday morning with a quick pin, but then fell to eventual runner-up, Elijah Pack. Sunday morning brought four more wins for Fletcher, including three pins. In the consolation semis, he fell 4-0, but came back in the match for fifth with a 15-0 technical fall win.
Stein, wrestling in the Division 4, 130-pound weight class, had a bye in the first round and followed it up with a second-round pin. He lost to the eventual fourth-placer in round three. A pin on Sunday morning earned Stein a place in the top eight, but a 4-2 loss to the third-placer, put him in the match for seventh place, where he recorded a quick first-period pin.
Other wrestlers competing for Canfield included Santino Marucci (3-2), Alexander George (2-2), Nathan Whitehead (2-2), Landon Biedelschies (1-2), Nick Crawford (1-2), Michael O’Horo (1-2), Alec Herman (0-2) and Ben Cutrer (0-2).
