3 arrested after raid

SALEM

Authorities arrested three Youngstown residents Tuesday after raiding an apartment for drugs. According to a written statement from Columbiana County Drug Task force, Salem police, the county sheriff’s office, BCI and the Drug Enforcement Administration performed a search in the 400 block of Continental Drive.

Officers recovered crack cocaine, drug paraphernalia and more than $2,200 in cash, the release says. Police arrested Marvin L. Gidney II of Hillman Street and Charles Pete of Indianola Avenue. Gidney was wanted on a warrant from Youngstown for trafficking heroin and cocaine; Pete was wanted on a warrant in Columbiana County for failure to appear. A Youngstown juvenile also was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

The renter was present during the raid, but the statement does not state if she was arrested. The drug task force is still investigating and more charges are pending.

3 escape fire

CHAMPION

A fire forced a family of three from their one-story home here Tuesday afternoon. Crews responded to a call in the 6000 block of North Park Avenue shortly after 4:45 p.m,, according to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner. Two elderly people and their middle-aged daughter were able to evacuate the home without injuries, firefighters said. About half the home was destroyed and the fire may have originated from a fireplace in the basement, they said.

2-day celebration

Abundant Love Outreach Ministries, 93 E. Myrtle Ave., will host a two-day celebration for people who have completed a substance abuse program in honor of elder Curtiss Minnifield II. Pastor Derrick Moffett of Seventh Day Adventist Church in Akron and International Brotherhood of Christian Men will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday. Apostle Derrick Scott of Alpha and Omega Ministries in Niles and the Men and Women in Action Fellowship will speak at 7 p.m. Friday.

Area residents interested in attending Kent State University at Salem are invited to Information Night Thursday beginning with a majors fair at 5:30 p.m. The information session begins at 6 p.m. The invitation extends to area high-school students and their parents, as well as recent graduates and adults.

Faculty and staff members will be available to meet with prospective students and share information about specific degree programs during the majors fair. Campus tours will also be given, and representatives will discuss the admissions process, share financial aid information and provide details about scholarship opportunities.
