The Poland school board announced a special meeting for 6 p.m. today in the Poland Seminary High School auditorium, 3199 Dobbins Road, for the announcement of a new superintendent. Vindicator news partner 21 WFMJ-TV identified the new superintendent as David Janofa, 47, current superintendent of Sandy Valley schools.

In other business at its meeting Monday, the board approved two measures to relax certain restrictions regarding posting of signs.

Officials agreed to allow signs pertaining to school levies and bond issues as well as ads related to the district’s athletic facilities and programs to be put on school property.

Kindergarten packets

Kindergarten registration packet pickup continues from 8:30 a.m. 7 p.m. today and from 12:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the school board office, 700 S. Raccoon Road. If your child will be 5 years old by Sept. 30 and you are a resident of the Austintown School District, registration packets are available to be picked up at the Austintown Board of Education. If you are not an Austintown resident, you must also apply for open enrollment for the 2013-14 school year by completing the Open Enrollment Application online at www.austintown.k12.oh.us/main.

Applications for open enrollment are being accepted for all grade levels.

Man faces charges

A Youngstown man was charged with obstructing official business, fleeing/eluding and refusing to submit to an operating a vehicle while impaired test, accused of fleeing from police first by car and then on foot.

Reginald J. Ware Jr., 22, of West Evergreen Avenue, was charged late Saturday when police tried to stop the vehicle he was driving on Mahoning Avenue. A police report said Ware initially slowed the car but then accelerated and turned onto Kleber Avenue.

Ware then got out of the car while it was still moving and ran toward Norquest Boulevard. Officers caught up to him in a yard on East Rockwell Road.

Niles school board appoints new member

NILES

The city school board unanimously appointed Lori Hudzik, owner of a Niles insurance business, to the board Monday.

Hudzik, 46, was chosen from a group of six candidates to fill the unexpired term of Eric Lanham, who resigned in February. Lanham’s four-year term expires at the end of this year, meaning that Hudzik will have to run for election in November if she wants to stay on the board.

Hudzik, a lifelong city resident, is a former secretary in the school system who earned a degree in integrated mathematics. She told the audience at the board meeting her priorities are academics and school finances.

Woman charged

WARREN

Katherine R. Cox, 28, of state Route 45 in Bristolville was charged with burglary and escape after Warren police arrested her a second time Friday.

Police first arrested her on a warrant out of Texas at 3:37 p.m. at Belmont and Mercer Streets Northeast.

She was taken to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital after she said she had a staph infection in her hand.

But she escaped from the hospital emergency room on foot and was found at Belle Street and Oak Knoll Avenue Southeast at 5:12 p.m. and taken back to the hospital and then to jail.

While she was gone from the hospital, police believe she broke into a house on Woodbine Avenue Southeast.

A resident of the house said he found a woman hiding under a bed in the basement. The woman fled after the man confronted her, he said.

Vienna man arraigned

NILES

Matthew Stein, 20, of Niles-Vienna Road in Vienna, was arraigned in Niles Municipal Court Monday on five charges related to a Sunday hit-and-run accident that injured a Niles police officer.

No plea was entered on the felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident. Innocent pleas were entered on charges of underage alcohol consumption, operating a motor vehicle intoxicated, failure to control and a seat-belt violation.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Niles police officer Daniel Myers, 33, was treated at St. Joseph Health Center after the 1:10 a.m. crash on McKees Lane.

Stein’s car went off the right side of the road and struck the cruiser, which the highway patrol said was legally parked in the driveway of a private business. After the crash, Stein left the scene, and Niles police stopped him several miles away. Stein suffered minor injuries.

Memorial burned

WARREN

Part of the roadside memorial to the six teens who died in a March 10 car accident burned at 2:44 a.m. today. The memorial consists mostly of teddy bears.

The Warren Fire Department responded to the site on Niles Warren River Road about a mile south of downtown and put out the fire, said Dan Suttles, assistant Warren fire chief.

The fire department doesn’t know whether the fire was set on purpose or by accident. There were candles at the site, but Suttles said he doesn’t know whether they were lit at the time of the fire.
