Police: 5 confess raping tourist

NEW DELHI

Five men have been arrested and have confessed raping a Swiss woman who was attacked in central India while on a cycling vacation with her husband, police said.

Two other suspects are being sought, said D.K. Arya, a senior police officer. The five men arrested in Datia on Sunday are from villages near where the attack occurred Friday night as the Swiss couple camped in a forest in Datia district of Madhya Pradesh state.

The couple told police that the woman had been raped by seven or eight men, but that it was dark and they could not be sure of the exact number, Arya said. They said the husband also was attacked by the men.

Syrian opposition choosing interim PM

BEIRUT

Syria’s main opposition group is launching its most serious attempt yet to form a rival government to President Bashar Assad’s regime, convening in Turkey today to choose an interim prime minister for areas the rebels control.

Twelve candidates are running, including economists, businessmen and a former Syrian Cabinet minister.

Some warn setting up such a government could close the door to negotiating an end to Syria’s civil war and instead harden the battle lines even more.

Cop charged in fatal collision

CHICAGO

A judge set bail at $500,000 Sunday for a suburban Chicago police officer accused of causing a traffic accident that killed two people in a wrong-way collision on Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive.

During the hearing, prosecutors said Terrell Garrett’s blood-alcohol content after Friday’s wreck was measured at 0.184, which is more than twice the legal limit of 0.08. The North Chicago police officer is charged with two counts each of reckless homicide and aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol.

Garrett, 35, was in serious condition at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and didn’t attend the hearing.

Quest to become 1st Asian NYC mayor

NEW YORK

City Comptroller John Liu embarked Sunday on a mayoral bid that illuminates the political rise of New York City’s Asian-American population but has been shadowed by a fundraising-conspiracy case against two former aides.

Already the first person of Asian descent to be elected citywide in New York, Liu, a Democrat, hopes to become its first Asian-American mayor.

Born in Taiwan, Liu came to New York City at age 5. He grew up and still lives in the Flushing section of Queens.
