Elm Street closing

YOUNGSTOWN

Elm Street, between Saranac Avenue and Tod Lane, is closed through mid-November for a bridge replacement. The detour is Gypsy Lane to Fifth Avenue to Broadway Street, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation. This work is the beginning of a $2.3 million project to replace the Elm Street bridge between Saranac and Tod. The entire project is scheduled to be finished by late November.

Free coats, shoes

YOUNGSTOWN

Greater Friendship Baptist Church, 646 Lakewood, Youngstown (Hillman Street parking lot), will pass out free coats, shoes and other clothing from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today. Sponsored by the Dress to Succeed Ministry. Recipients are asked to bring containers or bags for the clothing.

SKYWARN training planned

Austintown

Mahoning County amateur radio operators will host a SKYWARN training event Wednesday in Fitch High School auditorium, 4560 Falcon Drive. Sign-in will be at 5:15 p.m. and training begins at 6. SKYWARN is a nationwide network of volunteers trained by the National Weather Service to report significant weather. Amateur radio operators who attend the event will be taught to access SKYWARN Net, allowing them to report incidents of severe local weather and be directly heard at the National Weather Service. Found unconscious

WARREN

A 36-year-old Jackson Street Southwest man was found with a cut to the back of his head and unconscious in the parking lot of 439 Chestnut St. NE at 11:20 p.m. Thursday.

Police said they were called to ITAM 29 Club at 625 High St. NE for an altercation that left the man unconscious. The man was taken to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital. Information on his condition was not available.

OVI checkpoint

CANFIELD

Police officers with Mahoning County OVI (Operating a Motor Vehicle under the Influence) Task Force will be operating a sobriety checkpoint in the county this weekend. The specific location of the checkpoint has not been disclosed. The Ohio State Highway Patrol also will be assisting task-force officers.

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Chapter 2122 will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Community Activity Center Building at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station.

Colorectal screenings

In recognition of March being National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, ValleyCare Health System of Ohio is offering free colorectal screening kits from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday. Screening is painless, easy and done at home. The sample is mailed in the envelope included with the kit, and ValleyCare’s laboratory will perform the analysis and mail the results to the individual or his or her physician. People can get the kit without leaving their cars at Northside Medical Center, ValleyCare Health Center Austintown, Trumbull Memorial Hospital Medical Professional Building and ValleyCare Health Center–Elm Road.
