The Boardman library hosted a “Show What You Know: Crochet and Knit” program in its meeting room Feb. 7. The program, led by Boardman librarian Karen Saunders, gave people who did not know how to crochet or knit the chance to learn while giving people with those skills the chance to practice them and to teach their skills to others.
Many people sat in groups, discussing and practicing their favorite forms of this skill. One group used knitting loops to make baby hats and planned to give them as gifts.
“I have been doing this form of knitting for about five years now,” said Lauryn Ellis. “My friend’s grandma does knitting, crochet, and other crafts and donates them to the hospital. I saw her and it inspired me to want to help, so she taught me.”
Another group worked on making baby afghans, scarfs and more, using basic crochet stitches. First-time crocheters were taught by veterans of the craft and all were patiently encouraged and shown how to fix mistakes.
“We thought this would be something fun to do at the library,” said Saunders. “Crochet and knitting are wonderful hobbies that can be very rewarding to learn and to practice. If you want to learn, but don’t know anyone who can teach you or if you are looking for new patterns to use, we have a lot of books on crochet and knitting here at the library.”
The Boardman library hosts this event every month and the theme varies from month-to-month. To learn more, visit www.libraryvisit.org.
