Canfield gymnasts place at national championships

The Ohio Gymnastics Institute Competitive Team competed at the Amateur Athletic Union Winter National Championships on Feb. 16 and 17 at the Spire Institute in Geneva. More than 500 boys and girls from five states and 23 gymnastics clubs competed in 13 different skill levels to determine this year’s 2013 AAU Winter National Event and All-Around Champions.
The Ohio Gymnastics Institute, located in Austintown, captured 25 gold medals, 23 silver medals and 22 bronze medals. Several youth from Canfield placed at the competition.
Madeline Wills finished second in the vault, eighth in the uneven parallel bars, third in the balance beam and seventh in the floor exercise and all-around. Wills final score was 34.800.
Hope Karash ended with 32.350 points and placed sixth in the vault, third in the uneven parallel bars, seventh in the balance beam, fourth in the floor exercise and fifth all-around.
Madison Leone took second in the vault, uneven parallel bars, the floor exercise and all-around. She took fourth in the balance beam.
Kamiron Childers placed first in the uneven parallel bars, second in the balance beam, eighth in the vault, 12th in the floor exercise and fifth all-around. Childers added 34.150 points to the team.
Sydney Russell took fourth in the balance beam and floor exercise, seventh in the vault, uneven parallel bars and all-around. Russell finished with 32.325 points.
Giovanna Cestone took ninth in the vault and the balance beam, sixth in the uneven parallel bars, eighth in the floor exercise and 10th all-around. Cestone ended with a score of 35.375.
Connor Wills placed fifth in floor exercise and pommel horse, sixth in the vault, parallel bars and high bar. Wills took fifth in the rings and sixth all-around and ended with a score of 53.6000.
Chris Campana accumulated 57.100 points, placing second in the vault, third in the pommel horse, rings and all-around. Campana took fourth in the parallel bar and sixth in the floor exercise.
