Canfield grad named to master’s program

Julian Hierl, a 2009 graduate of Canfield High School, has been accepted to the master’s program in Spanish at Kent State University for the fall semester 2013. He is the son of Elizabeth Schmid of Neurmberg, Germany, and the grandson of Robert and Sonia Einfeldt of Canfield.

Benefit wine tasting April 20

The Youngstown Country Club will host a wine tasting on April 20 from 7 to 9 p.m. The gala event will pair complimentary hors d’oeuvres with the exquisite wines that have been selected for tasting, including some premier local winemakers. The event will benefit the Mahoning County DD Special Olympics Program. Tickets are $50 per person, which includes a charitable tax deduction of $25. White House hosts weekend event

White House Fruit Farm will host White House Weekend today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and tomorrow from noon to 4 p.m. The annual event will feature a unique blend of fun and food for the entire family. A number of Ohio food vendors will offer tasting samples. A large selection of fresh fruits and vegetables, deli and bakery items and locally-produced maple syrup will be featured in the 10,000-square-foot farm market, located 10 minutes south of Canfield on Route 62.

Audubon Society meeting set

Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Wildlife of the Mahoning Valley” on March 26 at 7 p.m. at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm. Jim Kerr, curator of the Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center, will talk about local species of mammals, birds and reptiles. The Mill Creek MetroParks Farm is on Route 46 in Canfield. Learn to spot severe storms

Mahoning County Skywarn, a volunteer organization of weather spotters, will host a training session on how to recognize approaching storms and tornadoes. Gary Garnet, Warning Coordinator Meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Cleveland, will conduct the training Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Austintown Fitch High School auditorium, 4560 Falcon Dr. Training is free and open to the public. Sign-in begins at 5:30 p.m.

Canfield resident named to Dean’s list

Jennifer Hudock has been named to the 2012 fall semester Dean’s list at Bethel College with a 4.0 GPA.

Camera Club hosts meetings

Writers meeting set

Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend the next meeting of Monday Night Writers, Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Peaberry’s Caf , 4350 Boardman-Canfield Road.

Led by author and professional writer Nancy Christie, the two-hour sessions include a mix of writing exercises, information on the creative and business aspects of writing, and group feedback on ‘works-in-progress.’

Registration open for Women’s Heart Day

Registration for the 10th annual Woman’s Heart Day, a free health and wellness extravaganza provided by Humility of Mary Health Partners, opens April 1.

Provided as a service to the community, Woman’s Heart Day will take place on May 9 from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Covelli Centre. This annual event features free health screenings, fitness demonstrations, educational presentations on a variety of women’s health issues, cooking demonstrations, spa services, refreshments and giveaways.

Among the health screenings offered this year are bone density, lipid panel (cholesterol) and A1c testing, blood pressure readings, vision screenings, stroke risk and skin cancer risk assessments.

Registration is required and appointments for bone density, lipid panel and A1c testing are limited.

Pink Ribbon Golf Classic set

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will be at Squaw Creek at Avalon Golf and Country Club on July 15. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Special Olympics fundraiser set

A Special Olympics fundraiser will be on April 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Bev Road MASCO Workshop, 825 Bev Road, Boardman. More than 800 items will be available for purchase at the Shop-Till-You-Drop sale benefitting the Mahoning County DD Special Olympics. The sale will feature YSU, Steelers, Browns and Cleveland Indians sports items along with jewelry, purses, toys, books and home d cor.

The event will also include 100 gift baskets with items such as a Colt McCoy autographed football, overnight stay at Mountaineer Resort and Casino, Kindle, cameras, and a year of skating at the Skate Zone. There will also be a gift card raffle valued at $500. One person will win gift cards to local restaurants, bakeries, retail stores, golf items, salons and more.

Eat with the Easter bunny

Tickets are now on sale for Dinner with the Easter Bunny on March 27-28 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Lariccia Family Community Center in Boardman Park. Tickets can be purchased at the park office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Tickets are $6 for Boardman residents and $7 for non-residents. Children under 18 months are admitted free. Cost includes dinner, arts and crafts, and a family photo with the Easter Bunny.

Easter egg hunt March 23

The free Easter Egg and Goodie Bag Hunt at Boardman Park will be March 23. The event will be for children 8 and under. Bring your baskets and arrive early. Dress for the weather. Times are:

10 a.m. — for ages 2 and under at the Bocce Court

10:15 a.m. — for ages 3-4 at the Masters Pavilion

10:30 a.m. — for ages 5-8 at the Baseball field

Bring your iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone to the Canfield library at 6:30 p.m. on March 26 and they will show you how to download digital books from the library’s Digital Catalog on the library website. Space is limited. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Canfield library to register.

Play marching band madness

Stop by the Canfield library during library hours through the month of March to see if you can figure out which celebrities played what instruments in high school marching band. If you march on in, you could win a prize. For teens in grades 7-12.

Read tales to tails

Sign up to read to a registered therapy dog, which helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence, and encourages a love of reading at the Canfield library on Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome. Bring a book of your choice. Dogs are provided by K-9 for Compassion, registered Delta society therapy dogs.

Church presents Cross-Walk

The Canfield Presbyterian Church will host Cross-Walk 2013 on Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This journey will allow you to travel alongside Jesus to meet His disciples, meet Judas Iscariot, watch Jesus pray in the Garden of Gethsemane, stand at the foot of the cross where he was crucified and experience his resurrection.

Content is appropriate for elementary-aged children to adults. Nursery care is available.

Church hosts egg drop

Canfield Presbyterian Church will host the second annual Giant Egg Drop on March 23 from 10 a.m. to noon. Families will be challenged to drop a raw egg, from different heights, without breaking the egg. Supplies will be provided. Walk the bunny trail and look for eggs and special treats along the way.

Library closed March 30-31

All branches of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will be closed on March 30 and 31 for Easter.

Church hosts spaghetti dinner

Bethel Lutheran Church, 425 Crestview Dr. will host its semi-annual Mickey Schuster Scholarship Spaghetti Dinner today from 4 to 7 p.m. The cost is $7 for adults and $3 for children under 12. Carry outs will be available. Tickets are available at the door or by calling the church office at 330-758-5745. Dinners include pasta with meatballs, salad, bread, dessert and drink.

All proceeds go to the Mickey Shuster Scholarship Fund and are distributed each year to the college students at Bethel.

Canfield Christian Church will be hosting Lenten breakfasts every Wednesday through March 27. The breakfasts will be from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. Breakfast is free and donations will be accepted.
