In 2012, Mahoning Valley Red Cross, which serves Mahoning and Trumbull counties, helped 500 people, primarily victims of fires, with disaster assistance. Here are some facts about the organization:
The Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley has about 200 active volunteers and four paid staff members.
Already in 2013, local Red Cross Disaster Assistance Teams have responded to 25 major fires with three fatalities in the two-county area.
The Red Cross has an unfunded mandate from Congress to respond to disasters and receives no government funds.
All revenue is raised through the United Way, foundations and individual donors.
The local Red Cross budget in 2012 was about $500,000.
