Eagle award

Derrick J. Houston, 17, of Boardman, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest achievement awarded by the Boy Scouts of America, during a court-of-honor ceremony last month at East Fairfield First United Methodist Church.

He is a member of Buckeye Council, Sandy Beaver District, and Troop 40 of East Fairfield.

For his Eagle Scout service project, Houston improved an outdoor area for students and staff at Columbiana High School. He designed an outdoor eating and study area which included building six picnic tables and landscaping. He was assisted by fellow Scouts, the Columbiana National Honor Society and his family. Columbiana Chevrolet Buick Cadillac was the major financial contributor with Lowe’s of Boardman donating supplies.

A Scout since second grade, Houston’s awards include brotherhood in the Order of the Arrow, and Columbiana Rotary Club’s most outstanding Scout.

At Columbiana High School, he serves as senior class representative, a member of the National Honor Society, golf team, quiz bowl and is a former class president.

He is the son of Jeffrey Houston of Boardman and Teresa Piszczek of Girard.
