On Feb. 7 and 8, Boardman Rotary members made their annual dictionary donations to third-grade students in all Boardman elementary schools.
As part of this donation, Rotary members talked about the importance of literacy and dictionary skills, as well as the principles of the Rotary organizations, such as service above the self. The Rotary also talked about the different programs at the Boardman library and how the library and the Rotary work together to support each another.
“Knowing how to read is very important to the Boardman Rotary,” said Deborah Liptak, Development Director at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, as well as a member of the Boardman Rotary. “Reading is very powerful. We really want to encourage these students to use these dictionaries and to come to the summer reading programs at the library so they keep these reading skills.”
Liptak also said the money to donate these dictionaries was raised entirely by the Rotary and will also help fund the organization’s other projects throughout the year.
“We have been donating dictionaries for as long as I have belonged to the Rotary,” said Liptak. “Third grade is a very important year because this is when they learn and work on those dictionary skills and we think it’s important for each child to own one. We know students that got their dictionary in third grade and many of them keep them and use them in college.”
