Boardman Township Park Board Commissioners meet at 5 p.m. today in the Georgeanna Parker Building in the park at 375 Boardman-Poland Road.

Cook-off winners

BOARDMAN

The Mahoning Valley Pizza Cook-Off, which took place Sunday at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman, brought commendations to many local pizzerias.

Cassese’s MVR won Maestro Di Cucina at the event, which benefited the Potential Development Program.

The People’s Choice award went to Bruno Brothers, while the best traditional pizza was a tie between Cassese’s MVR and Ianazone’s. Best nonred pizza was awarded to Belleria of Boardman, best gourmet went to Strikers, and best Brier Hill-style pizza went to Bruno Brothers.

Open enrollment

The Girard City School District will be accepting open enrollment applications for 2013-14 for students entering kindergarten through fourth grade. Applications are available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays in the superintendent’s office, 704 E. Prospect St. They must be returned by April 15.

OVI crashes decrease by 14%

CANFIELD

The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s effort to stem crashes resulting from operating motor vehicles under the influence, an effort nicknamed “Trooper Shield,” has decreased Operating a Vehicle Impaired crashes by 14 percent in 2012, according to the OSHP Canfield post.

Arrests for OVI also increased by 3 percent in 2012, the OSP reported, with 24,520 arrests made throughout the state. Almost one in four of those arrests included a speed violation, and 17 percent included a violation for driving without a valid driver’s license. At the Canfield post, troopers arrested 609 impaired drivers in Mahoning County.

Siren test planned

Hermitage, Pa.

Hermitage Fire Department conducts its monthly test of the area’s weather-warning sirens at 10 a.m. Thursday.

The test will include activation of the Clark, Farrell, Sharpsville, West Middlesex and Wheatland weather sirens. Citizens are asked to disregard the alerting sirens during the test.
