Eagle SCOUT Awards

Dennis Mansfield Jr. of New Middletown, a member of Boy Scout Troop 49, received his Eagle Scout award, Boy Scouting’s highest honor, at a court-of-honor ceremony at Free Methodist Community Church in New Middletown.

Mansfield is the son of Dennis Sr. and Beverly Mansfield. His father is troop Scoutmaster.

Dennis joined Cub Scouts as a Tiger Cub with Cub Scout Pack 119 at the Petersburg Presbyterian Church in Petersburg. He advanced through the ranks of Cub Scouts and was awarded Cub Scouts highest honor, the Arrow of Light. In 2008, he joined Troop 49, which is sponsored by the church.

Mansfield has earned 36 merit badges, the 50-miler Award, Greater Western Reserve Council 75 night camping award, and the Camp Seven Ranges Fourth-Year camp honors Pipestone award. He is a member of the Wapashuwi Lodge 56, Order of the Arrow, and has had Troop 49 positions as assistant patrol leader, patrol leader, and senior patrol leader. He attended the 2010 National Scout Jamboree in Fort A.P. Hill, Va.

For his Eagle Scout service project, Mansfield installed a flagpole at the Free Methodist Community Church. To fund the project, he sold personalized bricks that were placed as a walkway around the flagpole.

Dennis is a sophomore at Springfield Local High School, a member of the football team, and sophomore class vice president. He is a member of the church.

Micah Marra of Berlin Center, a member of Boy Scout Troop 71, has earned his Eagle Scout award. The troop meets at the Ellsworth VFW, and Scoutmaster is Mike Smith.

Marra, the son of Frank and Karen Marra, has been a Scout since 2005 and has held the position of troop patrol leader.

For his Eagle Scout project, he worked with local resident Denny Furman to honor Ronnie Hanson, a Western Reserve High School student who died in 1980 at age 14 after a battle with leukemia. The community previously had raised funds to build a tennis court in 1986 dedicated in Hanson’s name. Last year, the courts were replaced with a new playground. To continue the legacy of Hanson’s memory at the site, Marra planned and constructed a memorial at the playground honoring Hanson’s life with help from his fellow Scouts, Furman, friends and family.

Marra is a senior at Western Reserve, where he is on the football, track and ski teams.

Michael T. Shobel of Boardman will be presented with his Eagle Scout award at his court-of-honor ceremony next Sunday at St. Charles Borreomeo Parish in Boardman.

Shobel has been a member of Troop 60 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Boardman since 2006 under Scoutmaster Byron Harnishfeger. He has served as patrol leader, assistant patrol leader and senior patrol leader. He earned his Fifth-Year Pipestone and Sixth-Year Service Award. He has participated in the Historical Hike Patch at Gettysburg.

For his Eagle Scout service project, he built dog shelters for Angels for Animals.

Shobel is a senior at Boardman High School, where he is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Club and is a Link Leader. At St. Charles Church, he is a member of the Celebrate Team.
