Phantoms top Steel in shootout

YOUNGSTOWN

Austin Cangelosi scored the decisive shootout goal, his 15th goal of the season, as the Youngstown Phantoms defeated the Chicago Steel, 3-2, Friday night in front of 1,744 fans at the Covelli Centre.

Kyle Connor also scored for the Phantoms in the shoot-out.

Youngstown is now 27-20, in fourth place in the Eastern Conference of the USHL. The Phantoms hold an 11-point lead over fifth-place Cedar Rapids.

The Steel took the lead at 12:45 of the first period on a power-play goal by Alex Roos.

The Phantoms tallied twice in the second period. Eric Sweetman scored short-handed at 17:59, his sixth goal of the season. Assists went to Nathan Walker and Cam Brown.

Sam Anas put the Phantoms ahead at 9:27 with his 24th goal, assisted by Daniel Renouf and Alexander Dahl.

Chicago’s Charlie O’Connor knotted the game with 6:27 on the third period clock.

Youngstown keeper Sean Romeo recorded 25 saves, including three in the scoreless overtime period.

The Phantoms wound up with a 39-27 edge in shots on goal but were 0-for-6 in power play opportunities. Chicago was 1-for-6 with a man-advantage.

Cangelosi was chosen the game’s first star, Anas was the second star and Brown the third star. Brown had six shots to go with his assist on the Sweetman goal.

The Phantoms host Tri-City tonight, then are off until March 10 when they visit Green Bay.
