YSU swimmer Dow sets school record

CHICAGO

The Youngstown State swimming and diving team picked up its first school record at the Horizon League Championships as sophomore Ashley Dow eclipsed the school mark in the 200-yard individual medley.

Dow won the consolation final in the 200 IM with a school-best mark of 2:07.10 for a ninth-place finish.

The Penguins placed fourth in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:48.92, just .16 off the school record.

In the team standings, the Penguins sit in sixth place with 124 points. Cleveland State leads the way with 276 points while Green Bay is second (260 points) and Milwaukee is third at 251. The meet resumes today.

PBA Hubbard Open qualifier is tonight

The Quality Inn Qualifier for the third annual PBA Hubbard Open, presented by The Trumbull County Tourism Bureau, is today at 8 p.m. at Bell-Wick Bowl.

Entry fee is $60. One of seven win an entry to bowl with the pros in the Hubbard Open.

Ervin ‘Magic’ Dodge Sweeper is Saturday

The Ervin “Magic” Dodge Memorial Sweeper is Saturday at noon at Boardman Lanes.

The event is five games across 10 lanes, open to men and women in handicap and scratch divisions. Entry fee is $40 per division. Proceeds benefit the Ervin Dodge Scholarship, which was established in 1999 at YSU.

Sportsman’s Show returns to Eastwood

The Sportsman’s Fishing & Hunting Super Show and Sale returns to the Eastwood Expo Center this weekend.

The event features more than 150 exhibitors. Hours are noon to 8 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $6 with kids 12-and-under free.

Clippers end Pacers’ streak

Chris Paul scored 29 points, while Blake Griffin finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds to help the Los Angeles Clippers hold off Indiana’s late charge for a 99-91 victory Thursday.

The Clippers (42-18) have won three straight and seven of their past eight.

David West led the Pacers (36-22) with 22 points, while All-Star Paul George had 20 points and five assists. Danny Granger finished with a season-high 12 points.

Noah leads Bulls past Philaelphia

Joakim Noah had 23 points, 21 rebounds and a career-high 11 blocks for his third career triple-double and the Chicago Bulls ended a two-game losing streak with a 93-82 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday.

Carlos Boozer added 21 points and 12 rebounds while Kirk Hinrich and Luol Deng had 15 and 12 points, respectively, as the Bulls completed a three-game regular season series sweep.

Noah tied the Bulls record for blocks in a regulation game, previously set by Artis Gilmore in 1977.

Jrue Holiday paced the Sixers with 22 points, Spencer Hawes added 20 points and 15 rebounds while Evan Turner had 12 points.

Catholic Seven to become Big East

ATLANTA

The breakup of the Big East is almost complete.

According to multiple sources, presidents and athletic directors from Big East full members, the schools that play all league sports, including football, are scheduled to meet today in Atlanta to consider a separation proposal between those schools and the “Catholic Seven” schools looking to leave the league.

According to one Big East source, the proposal calls for the departing schools to take the Big East name with them and leave as early as this year, starting the new league in 2013-14.
