Scrappers win 6-2 at Williamsport
Staff Report
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.
Robert Whitenack threw six shutout innings and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers built a 5-0 lead while he was on the mound on the way to a 6-2 win Saturday over the Williamsport Crosscutters.
Whitenack struck out a pair and yielded just five hits in his second start of the season. He lowered his earned run average to 1.84.
A 24-year-old right-hander, Whitenack was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the eighth round in 2009. He missed parts of the 2011 and 2012 seasons following Tommy John surgery in the summer of 2011.
He had made two starts with Class AA Akron and two starts with Class A Carolina previously this season.
The Scrappers (6-7) scored twice in the third inning, on a Williamsport error and a double by Nellie Rodriguez.
A double by Ryan Battaglia followed by a Tyler Booth single increased the lead to 3-0 in the fourth.
Booth scored in the sixth on a single by Rodriguez, then Juan Herrera, who had walked, came home on a James Roberts single.
Mahoning Valley added a run in the ninth when Claudio Bautista walked with the bases loaded.
Williamsport scored twice in the seventh off James Stokes then Harold Guerrero and Ben Heller blanked the Crosscutters the rest of the way.
