Apply for Salvation Army help at Christmas in July event

The Salvation Army of Mahoning County invites county residents to apply for four services in one appointment at its “Christmas in July” registration at 1501 Glenwood Ave. on Wednesdays and Fridays in July.

The specific registration days and hours are from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 12, 19, 24, 26 and from 1 to 7 p.m. July 10 and 17. Final registrations will take place July 29 and 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and July 31 from 1 to 7 p.m.

The first 450 children registered will be eligible for a backpack with school supplies for children in grades K-8, a new winter coat for children between age 3 and 18, Christmas toys for kids up to age 12 and a food voucher for the family.

The next 450 registered children within the age limits will be eligible for coats, toys and family food vouchers. Children registered after the first 900 will be eligible for toys and family food vouchers.

Individual applicants and families with members above the listed ages also may register for food vouchers on these dates.

To be eligible, all applicants must provide current photo ID for themselves and all other adults in the household, birth certificates for all children who will be registered and Social Security cards for all members of the household. Social Security cards will only be used for verification purposes.

Applicants also must provide proof of all income including pay stubs for the past 30 days, an Ohio Department of Job and Family Services printout within the last 30 days, child-support papers, SSI/SSD letters, workers’ compensation statement and rent subsidy/utility allowance stubs. Additionally, applicants must provide one bill to document expenses such as a lease, mortgage, utility bill, car payment, child care, insurance or any other bill they pay.

During the 2012 Christmas season, the Salvation Army of Mahoning County served 4,952 people in 1,822 households by providing food vouchers with an approximate value of $35,500 and 15,964 toys.
