Morgan’s Raid speech correction: It’s July 28

WELLSVILLE

Civil War author and historian Lester V. Horwitz will speak at 3 p.m. July 28 at the Wellsville River Museum, 1003 Riverside Ave. His topic will be John Hunt Morgan’s Ohio Raid.

The wrong date for his speech was published in the Society page digest on June 27.

S.C.O.P.E. Center will offer bingo

NILES

The Niles S.C.O.P.E. Senior Center, 14 E. State St., will sponsor bingo from 3:15 to 6 p.m. Sunday as part of the Harry Stevens Hot Dog Festival.

Bingo cards cost 25 cents each per game, and the prize is “split the pot.” For information call 330-544-3676.

Canines for a Cure planned at the park

AUSTINTOWN

Canines for a Cure will begin at noon Sunday after registration at 11:30 a.m. at Austintown Park in the Pogany Pavilion area.

The event’s slogan is “Fighting to Put Cancer in the Doghouse.” Registration costs $15 for the first dog and $5 for each additional dog.

Each of the first 100 registered dogs will receive a T-shirt, dog toy and dog bandana. Dogs must be leashed and owners must clean up after them.

The event will include vendors, raffles, basket auction table, and dog contests and games with prizes. Music, food and the band Northern Whale also will be featured.

All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.

Butler plans classes for would-be docents

YOUNGSTOWN

The Butler Institute of American Art is offering classes for new docents (volunteer tour guides) beginning September 10. Anyone interested in learning about art and willing to share time and knowledge with museum visitors is qualified.

Each year, children and adults from the Valley and across the country participate in programs conducted by Butler docents. Docent classes take place 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays from September through March.
