Weathersfield schools to seek renewal of levy

The Weathersfield Board of Education has moved to place renewal of an emergency levy on the Nov. 5 ballot.

It was first passed in November 2004 to generate $538,168 a year.

The original levy was for five years and 5.6 mills, but the board is seeking a 10-year term for the measure.

Treasurer Laurena Rouan explained that the laws have changed, and districts now can seek 10-year levies instead of the previous five-year cap for emergency measures.

The resolution asks the Trumbull County auditor to set the millage for the levy. The levy was last renewed in March 2008 at 5.2 mills.

The board also approved final receipts to close out the 2013 fiscal year, which will end Sunday.

Receipts totaled $26.004 million, which includes operating receipts of $11.073 million. The remaining $14.093 million is construction money for the district’s renovation and building plans under an Ohio School Facilities Commission grant and local funds for a $25.2 million project.

Funding includes $17.5 million from OSFC and $7.5 million in a local bond issue. The district will also add in $529,139 to pay for a new junior high gym at the high school, which will cost $1.5 million.

The final appropriations for 2013 were $13.068 million, with $2.909 million tied to construction.
