St. Charles School had its annual spring concert May 22.

The concert featured the fourth-grade beginner band and the fifth through eighth-grade advanced band under the direction of Tom Mastramico, as well as the third through eighth-grade children’s choir, the bell chime ensemble and the fourth-grade recorder ensemble, all under the direction of Laura Kotheimer.

St. Charles principal Mary Welsh welcomed everyone to the concert.

“I am so proud that we have a school where so many students practice and love music,” said Welsh.

Kotheimer said the concert helps the students display their music.

“The purpose of our concert is to provide a venue in which our music students can showcase their musical activities that grow from their love of learning to sing or play a musical instrument nurtured in the general music classroom,” said Kotheimer.

Mastramico said the music department puts on the concert to help the students learn.

“The kids learn confidence and that hard work and practicing on their instrument can produce good music for everyone to enjoy. They also learn how to work together as a group that can accomplish good music,” said Mastramico.

Students practice in the general music classes and after school once a week.

Kotheimer hopes the audience takes something away from the students’ performance.

“Music is a discipline that teaches, motivates and displays the talents of our students leading to a performance that will leave the audience with a renewed sense of beauty and the performers with a pride of accomplishment as their efforts are realized by all,” said Kotheimer.

Mastramico remarked on the music department.

“Our music department at St. Charles is strong and well, and growing every year with the hard work all the students put into their performance. When we have the student body at our concert this may encourage other students to also be a part of the music program, bringing more students to music which is a vital part of their rounded education,” said Mastramico.
