Dobbins Elementary fourth-grade students attended a luau June 5 in the school’s cafeteria, courtesy of the Dobbins PTO.
The fourth-graders got into the Hawaiian spirit by wearing grass skirts, flowered and brightly-colored tops and flowered leis.
Elaine Morlan, a fourth-grade teacher, said the students have been studying different aspects of Hawaii.
“They’ve learned about the rainforest and the different ecosystems in Hawaii,” said Morlan. “It fits in with our study of plants.”
The students also learned about the culture in Hawaii.
“Hawaii has a different form of culture, and they have different immigrants,” said Morlan. “They [students] learned how Hawaii is a melting pot just like the United State is a melting pot.”
At the luau, students could sample from a spread of food containing many different tropical fruits and vegetables.
After lunch, the fourth-graders learned how to hula.
