People of all ages laced up their running shoes for the Immaculate Heart of Mary 5K run and children’s run June 6.

“We had a lot of fun last year,” said Greta Frost. She and her dad, Tom, ran again this year.

“I used to run cross country and he’s always run, so I started running with him,” said Greta.

“We run together a lot,” Tom added. “It’s a good father/daughter thing to do together. We run almost every day.”

Crystal Siembiza Boggs and Joshua Boggs started their children on the running path early.

“We’re kind of a running family,” Siembiza Boggs said. “My husband runs; he’s fast. I run because it’s relaxing, and we got the kids running now, too.”

Their oldest, Elizabeth, has run in events before, but the IHM run was 2-year-old Peyton’s first time.

“It’s kind of exciting,” Crystal said. “It’ll be nice to, at the end of the day to go, ‘We did something as a family.’”

A children’s run started the event, and was followed by a 5K run through the streets surrounding IHM.

“Running is kind of fun,” Elizabeth said. “You can see your friends there, if they’re there.”

Elizabeth also said that running isn’t about winning and she noted that it’s good exercise.

For Amanda Tuscano, participating in the run was about achieving a personal goal.

“It will be my first 5K, and I just want to prove to myself I can do it,” Tuscano said.

Living near IHM, she sees the run participants go by every year

“I walk every day,” she said. “So I figured I can run this.”

The 5K and children’s run is offered every year on the Thursday of the IHM Festival.

“It’s part of the overall festival atmosphere,” said Robert Klempay, organizer.
