Canfield bands complete season
To close off the performing season, Canfield Middle School and High School recently had their annual spring concerts closing the 2013 concert season. The 137 member fifth-grade band and the 127 member sixth-grade band packed the CHS auditorium to capacity. CVMS band director Jim Volenik, in his 28th year in Canfield, led the bands.
Fifth-grader Raneen Musleh performed a piano concerto as a special solo artist.
Tthe seventh- and eighth-grade bands performed to a packed house and during the seventh-grade band performance, Canfield music teachers Tom and Kelly Scurich performed a vocal accompaniment to the arrangement “A Patriotic Festival.”
In the eighth-grade concert, bassoon player Jack Cross played a solo titled “Arioso Humoerske,” which highlighted his talent on the bassoon.
The CHS Concert and Symphonic Bands gave their final concert performances of the season, under the direction of Mike Kelly. Both bands performed some of their state contest pieces, which earned them superior ratings.
Seniors Hayley Ward and Michael Barkett were the featured soloists. Ward played Rachmaninoff’s “Prelude in G Minor” on the piano while Barkett played “Fantasie Brillante” on the trumpet.
The Canfield Band Parents also put on the annual band banquet, celebrating the accomplishments and achievements of the young musicians over the past 10 months. More than 300 people were in attendance at the event.
Students voted on awards given to band members by the band council, and each student received a certificate, varsity letter or pin depending on their class. Special recognition was given to the 31 graduating seniors for their many years of participation in the bands and for their leadership in the band and in the school.
The evening was capped off with dancing the night away to the Dickey White Band.
