Boardman Glenwood Middle School raised more than $3,000 for the American Cancer Society and celebrated with a dodgeball tournament May 16. Four student-filled teams in fifth-, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade competed against one another other for a chance to take on the faculty.

“Teams need to raise at least $48 to be able to participate in the eliminations. Once all the teams are created, we have an elimination round. This consists of each grade level competing in an after school bracket double elimination tournament to find the grade level winners. From that point the grade level winners compete in the final tournament which is always held during school,” said Jenn Dravecky student council advisor.

Miss Snyder’s fifth-grade homeroom raised the most money in the school bringing in more than $200.

Individual students who donated the most money got the best seats in the house at the dodgeball tournament. Those students were Mady Carlile and Mark Smaldino donating $40 and $60 respectively for their teams.

Dravecky hopes the students don’t lose sight of why they raise the funds.

“What I hope they gain from this is that everyone can find something to give in this type of a situation. Whether it is a monetary donation, a creative idea to raise the money, or offering their time to complete some of the tasks we need to get this done, every one of us has something to give. We talk a lot about appreciating what we have and making small sacrifices so that together we can give big rewards to others that are less fortunate. Or in this case, to help out the cause,” said Dravecky.

The fifth-grade team “Skillz that Killz” took on the sixth-grade team “Zniping Aim” and won. The seventh-grade team “King$” lost to the eighth-grade team “Bomb Squad.”

The eighth-grade team defeated the fifth-grade team and got a chance to take on the faculty team “Corporal Punishment”. In the end, the faculty came out on top.
