The Poland library hosted babies and books on June 12. The theme was discovering sounds.

The program, for babies ages six to 23 months, accompanied by an adult, featured developmentally-appropriate books, songs and rhymes to help babies discover different sounds.

“I’m a little duck and I go ‘quack, quack, quack,’” began Amanda Kollar, a Poland children’s librarian. “And I wiggle my tail in the back, back, back.”

The group of more than 10 then joined in. Babies and books featured many more rhymes and songs. Among them were “Itsy Bitsy Spider,” “The More We Get Together” and “Ring Around the Rosie.” Kollar also read “Play Baby Play” by Marilyn Janovitz.

Jaclyn Disibo said that she and her daughter try to come every week in the summer.

“It’s good for pre-reading,” said Disibo.

Kollar said babies and books helps young children in the long run.

“It helps build early literacy skills,” said Kollar.

The program ended with play time for the participants.

Babies and books meets every Wednesday in the summer at 10 a.m. at the Poland library.
