Britney Jonda, Bobby Jonda, Maura Flaviano and Zach Jacobson qualified for the junior finals of the Greatest Golfer of the Valley presented by Farmers National Bank.

A graphic element on Page B1 of Tuesday’s Vindicator incorrectly listed Joe Shushok, Joseph Lucci, Rachel Williamson and Nadya Stratton as qualifiers.

Playing Monday at Salem Golf Club, Flaviano shot 49 and Britney Jonda shot a 54 in the girls 12-14 division.

In the boys 12-14 division, Jacobson shot a 44 and Bobby Jonda shot a 46.

The next juniors qualifier is Friday at Tam O’Shanter Golf Course in Hermitage, Pa. Entries have been closed for the event.

Additional girls qualifiers are scheduled July 1 at Diamond Back Golf Course and July 12 at Tamer Win Golf & Country Club. Boys qualifiers are scheduled July 2 at Diamond Back and July 8 at Tamer Win.

The Greatest Golfer junior finals are July 28 at Trumbull Country Club in Warren.

Area golfers claim Jr. PGA sectional titles

Haylee Harford of Leavittsburg and Blake Prince of East Liverpool were victorious in the Northern Ohio PGA Sectional Junior Championships for golfers ages 13-18.

The event was contested Monday and Tuesday at Shady Hollow Country Club in Massillon.

Harford shot a two-under par 70 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 142 which gave her a three-stroke victory.

Prince edged Jason McQuown of Poland by one stroke by shooting a 72 on Tuesday, compared to McQuown’s 73, the score both golfers recorded on Monday. Prince finished with a two-day total of 145, one over par.

Among other local golfers, on the girls’ side Christina Cooper of Canfield was tied for sixth with a 160, Jacinta Pikunas of Boardman shot 162 to tie for eighth, and Alexis Cadle of Berlin Center was 19th with a 182.

Other local boys included Jacob Harrah of Newton Falls tied for 12th with a 155, Donavan Ray of Warren tied for 24th with a 160, and Ken Keller of Boardman tied for 34th with a 163.

Speedweek event axed because of bad weather

HARTFORD

The band of severe thunderstorms that came through eastern Trumbull County late Tuesday afternoon forced officials at Sharon Speedway to cancel the Ohio Speedweek event that was to include the All-Star Sprint Cars, Econo Mods, and Mini Stocks.

Refunds were issued. Those that left can send their passes in for a full refund to P.O. Box 159, Hartford, Ohio, 44424, or use their passes for the Aug. 20 “Lou Blaney Memorial” and receive $2 back in “Speedway Bucks.”

Sharon Speedway will be back in action Saturday for its usual “Steel Valley Thunder” schedule.

Two locals in hunt for Ohio Jr. Championship

Ryan Fowler of Warren stands third and Brian Terlesky of Youngstown is tied for fourth after the first round of the Ohio Junior Championship golf tournament Tuesday at Oasis Golf Club in Loveland.

The tournament concludes today.

Fowler shot a 3-under 69 and Terlesky came in with a 70. Will Grimmer of Cincinnati leads the field with a 66 and Alex Weiss of Pickerington shot a 68.

Other local golfers with their first-round scores include Dominic Carano of Canfield, 75, and Jared Wilson of Columbiana, 83.
