Greatest Scramble ignites — Krichbaum, Knepper, Hanysh among 9 new teams to qualify
“Three lawyers and a judge walk onto a golf course ...”
It’s not the start of a joke.
They’re among the many scramble teams that won their charity scrambles this weekend and qualified for the inaugural Miller 64 Greatest Scramble Challenge.
This weekend was hot, and not just based on temperature.
The new team scramble competition put on by The Vindicator and Covelli Enterprises has been quietly picking up steam in its first season, and this weekend, some top names in Valley golf crept into the championship.
Judge Krichbaum and his team that includes Marshall Buck, Ross Smith and Steve Maszcak carded 17-under Friday at the Mahoning County Juvenile Court Advisory Board at Kensington Golf Course.
Don’t think its legends who will be lighting up the Greatest Challenge. A foursome of college players — Michael Thorpe, Brandon Pluchinsky, Payton Snyder and Jake Fait — captured the title at the South Range Boosters outing at Diamondback.
Carding a 14-under (despite pars on all the Par 3s) at the Arc of Northeast Ohio’s event Monday at Knoll Run Golf Course was Craig Weaver, Mike McMahon, Joe McMahon and Jay Gresh.
It’s a special win for Joe McMahon, who’s also an assistant football coach at Fitch. He gets married this Saturday.
Two former YSU golfers powered their teams to berths in the championship.
Penguin Derek Knepper’s crew of he, Scott Seiple, Brian Carnie and Mark Tomko carded a 16-under at the Eastern Ohio Institute of Architects scramble Monday at Tippecanoe.
And 1990s Penguin Chad Hanysh was joined by Bryan Horne, Zack Mansky and Gary Woods won the Youngstown Shrine Club event Monday at Salem Hills.
There are just 10 scramble qualifiers left this summer to get into the Miller 64 Greatest Scramble Challenge that will take place Aug. 19 at The Lake Club. To get into that event, you must win a qualifier.
