Summer brings changes for district

Staff report

Change is coming to the Austintown School District this summer.

The old Fitch High School, which also became the Austintown Middle School, was sold to LRC Development Co. LLC this year for $2.5 million.

The property, located on Mahoning Avenue, may be used for retail in the future.

The stone engraved with “Fitch” from the old Fitch High School will be donated to the Class of 1962 memorial for veterans.

The brick memorial will be built at Austintown Fitch High School’s Falcon Stadium.

Frank Ohl and Watson Elementary School should be completely demolished by the end of this week.

The school board still has to decide what to do with the land after the demolition.

In May, an auction at the school brought in about $50,000 for the school district. Austintown had a subsequent auction at Lloyd, Woodside and Lynn Kirk Elementary schools that brought in about $90,000.

The money received from both auctions will go toward capital improvements in the district.

The demolition of LLoyd, Woodside and Davis Elementary schools should begin in early July, said Superintendent Vincent Colaluca.

Lynn Kirk will be used as an Early Learning Center and office building in the fall.
